Suu Kyi strengthens ties with ASEAN and China

Myanmar’s democractic government has laid down a people-centered foreign policy which it will play pro-actively role in the region and international affairs. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations marks 50th anniversary this year after it was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand. The founding members of ASEAN, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand signed a short document, known as the Bangkok Declaration. One of its main priorities is “to accelerate the economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region through joint endeavors in the spirit of equality and partnership in order to strengthen the foundations for a prosperous and peaceful community of Southeast Asian Nations”.
